I find lighthouses to be both mysterious and comforting. Mysterious in that I see them frequently in fogged weather conditions and that I don’t know what is inside.
But on a bright sunny day, when the sun has burned off the usual fog, I find lighthouses comforting. They stand bright against the sky and if you look closely from a distance, their white color reflects the blues of the ocean.
Pigeon Point Lighthouse was built in 1871 to guide ships on the Pacific coast of California. It’s nearest Pescadero on State Route 1, not far from the Bay Area.
This particular spring day, the last rain had brought out the mustard flowers and there were fields of them all around the area. I felt grateful for such beauty! I painted this scene because I wanted to share the sparkling yellow of the flowers, the intense blues of the ocean, the majestic lighthouse who’s white body reflected the colors of the water and the comfort and mystery that this scene brought me.
